My colleagues from the R&D department of Backbase have made the latest version of the free Community Edition available for download. This new version contains numerous fixes and upgrades. Most importantly:

• Great new starter kits with more extensive documentation that explains their setup. As an example I've put the Personal Information Manager online (taken offline). I'll explain more about that later.
• Small extensions to the BXML language.
• Upgraded and improved UI controls with better performance and keyboard navigation features.

The Personal Information Manager

The Personal Information Manager (PIM) is an example application that is packaged with the Community Edition with which you can manage contact information. It requires a PHP/MySQL backend and comes complete with a pre-filled DB. The application code is completely free and illustrates Backbase features like:

• The system skin, that automatically uses your OS-colors for UI-controls. This makes developing webapps that feel like desktop apps much easier.
• Symbolic drag & drop, a feature that enables front-end developers to completely control the procedure behind drag and drop actions.
• Customizable interface features that persist in a cookie, allowing users to create a personal environment.
• Combining standard Backbase controls with custom controls.

The example on my website is fully functional (except that I disabled file uploads) so please be nice and keep things decent. :) I hope you are as amazed as I was when it was first shown to me!
