When I was in university a couple of years ago, I spent quite a lot of evenings playing around with a music application by a then unknown Swedish software company, called Propellerhead Software. This application was called ReBirth and was special because it was a faithful digital simulation of a vintage analog synthesizer; the Roland TB-303 and it's rhythm counterpart, the TR-909-- two synthesizers that defined a decade of dance music.
Since the real 303's were impossible to find (and enormously expensive) ReBirth was a very convenient substitute. Even though some of my audiophile-friends claimed to be able to hear the difference, it sounded authentic enough for me to spend night after night creating very cheesy dance tracks.
That was a long time ago, however and Propellerhead Software has decided to stop development and support on this fantastic piece of software. Thankfully, they're kind enough to dedicate a site to it and give it away for free! If you've never played around with this software and have fond memories of the tweaked dance bass sounds from the last two decades, I strongly suggest you download the ISO image. Prepare to be amazed.
